RICHARD THE LIONHEART
Richard I the Lionheart (Oxford September 8, 1157 - April 6, 1199) was King of England and Duke of Aquitaine (1189 to 1199). Named Lionheart because of his courage on the battlefield. He was the third son and heir of King Henry II of England and Eleonora of Aquitaine, one of the leaders of the Third Crusade and one of the most famous monarchs of medieval Europe.
He was the favorite son of his mother Eleonora, from which he was named duke of Aquitaine (1168) and Count of Poitiers (1172).
